Official photographer to the Kremlin and picture editor of the popular magazine Ogonyok , Dmitri Baltermants (1912–1990) was the premier photojournalist in the Soviet Union for five decades. This career retrospective spans the sweep of Soviet history ranging from World War II to the Reagan-Gorbachev summit meetings. His incomparable war photographs include not only the icons Grief and Attack! but also rarely-seen introspective moments of soldiers awaiting battle. After the war, Baltermants documented all facets of Soviet life with visual intelligence and a tremendous heart, ranging from the struggles and triumphs of the working class to the machinations of the highest levels of leadership. His memorable pictures, while records of a particular time and place, resonate with universal meaning.
