Looking at Animals
Photographs by Henry Horenstein

“Looking at Animals” is a collection of the best animal photographs by noted photographer Henry Horenstein. In his unique style, Horenstein makes us look at animals as we have never seen them before— not as mere documents of what animals look like, but as a creative interpretation by one of our best
photographers of the subject.

Says Horenstein: “I deliberately chose not to shoot in color and not to show environments . Rather, I choose to look closely and abstractly—to see my subjects for their inherent beauty, oddness, mystery. For this, I shot often with macro lenses, so I could get close, and worked with grainy, black-and-white films,
printed in sepia, hoping to give them an old school, timeless feel. I believe animals are their very own creatures, with unique, often surprising and altogether amazing characteristics. And that's what I've tried
to capture in these pictures.”

Photographer Horenstein is author of over 30 books, including “Creatures,” “Aquatics,” and “Canine.” “Animalia,” his latest book, will be available to accompany this exhibit. Horenstein’s work has been widely exhibited and collected around the world. He is professor of photography at Rhode Island School of Design.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Harvard Museum of Natural History, and curated by its executive
director Elisabeth Werby
